COPA will leaflet the crowds this year on April 4 all day at Independence Avenue entrance to the Martin Luther King, Jr. Memorial in Washington, DC to call for full release of all records relating to the life and death of Dr. King. That date marks the 45th anniversary of his murder by forces within the U.S. government. We will have banners and flyers at the Main Street entrance. Please join us.

More than 60,000 pages remained sealed about Dr. King from the investigation of the House Select Committee on Assassinations in the 1970s, under Congressional orders. Many executive agencies kept files on Dr. King, including FBI, CIA and Army Intelligence which have yet to be released. Government spying on Dr. King’s family by Army Intelligence began with his grandfather and lasted until the day of his death. Other federal, state and local agencies and courts, as well as foreign countries still have classified or hidden records regarding Dr. King, the civil rights movement, and his assassination. These are part of public history and belong to us.

The recent Executive Order by President Obama to release all classified records buried for more than 25 years has been ruled not to apply to these records. COPA is approaching Congress again this session to introduce and pass a Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Records Act to effect full release. Please join us in that call.
