Highlights of a panel discussion with author James Douglass (JFK AND THE UNSPEAKABLE: WHY HE DIED AND WHY IT MATTERS), filmmaker Oliver Stone (JFK) and noted JFK researcher Lisa Pease. Moderated by: Robert Ellsberg.
Recorded live at the Saban Theatre, November 8th (the 50th anniversary of the election of JFK).
At the height of the Cold War, JFK risked committing the greatest crime in human history: starting a nuclear war. Horrified by the specter of nuclear annihilation, Kennedy gradually turned away from his long-held Cold Warrior beliefs and toward a policy of lasting peace. But to the military and intelligence agencies in the U.S., who were committed to winning the Cold War at any cost, Kennedy’s change of heart was a direct threat to their power and influence. Once these dark “Unspeakable” forces recognized that Kennedy’s interests were in opposition to their own, they tagged him as a dangerous traitor, plotted his assassination, and orchestrated the subsequent cover-up.
Harold Weisberg tore Stone’s movie apart. Go read all about it at the Harold Weisberg Digitial Archive.
Historian David R. Wrone was equally critical of Stone’s effort to build a movie around the Garrison case, a case which Weisberg walked away from before trial because he said there was no case.
The Weisberg materials on Garrison are quite revealing. Pure TNT.
Even as a dramatized work of fiction, the details and plot outlined in Stone’s JFK is 1000 times more plausable, likely and substantively documented than the Warren Report.
When Government agencies and top officials consistently lie, misrepresent, falsify information, selectively vet witnesses to eliminate all contrary information from the public record, tamper with evidence, threaten and intimidate witnesses to stay ‘on script’, engage in obfuscation and obscurantism, withold exculpatory evidence, engage in cover-up and ass-covering, then the government’s case loses all if not just MOST of its credibility. Not to mention the dozens of witnesses who were killed or eliminated when they were on the verge of damaging the government’s official case.
