This critical and seminal speech, given 50 years ago, and written with Kennedy by Theodore Sorenson, put him at odds with the Cold War Pentagon and intelligence agencies who did not want to move towards detente and disarmament or lasting peace. Kennedy had enraged members of the Joint Chiefs of Staff at the time of the Cuban Missile Crisis by his refusal to escalate to full-scale nuclear attack on the Soviet Union and China. In our view, this speech was a factor in the events that led to his assassination in November of 1963 in Dallas, Texas.
COPA has held annual commemorations of this speech for over a decade at the site. A luncheon will follow for researchers.
